Hey You Guys!!!

I thought it was about time to blog about something VERY important to me...

The Goonies...

Now, if you all didn't see the connection to "Hey you guys!" and the Goonies, my condolences. You truly haven't lived until you have embraced the awesomeness of Sloth and the treasure chasing kids of the Goon docks. They play, they say yes to adventure, and they even eat a Baby Ruth with no guilt.

Now here is the challenge of my life: How do incorporate the Goonies into Motherhood? In the last two weeks, my Emmitt (7) start first grade, Landon (5) started kindergarten, and Alexandra Bear (3) started preschool. Oh did I mention, the preschool is at my home and I'm the teacher??? I also have been booking photo shoots twice a week, volunteering for church, and had missing husband who works shiftwork. Needless to say, I am a little stressed.

So I say, lets take a "Goony" approach to life.

I know what you're all thinking: Instead of dealing with my problems, I should go on a treasure hunt to find rubies. Then my house will magically clean itself, the spelling words will seep into my kid's brain in his sleep, and all those photos will edit themselves!!

Obviously, that's the only solution.

And that's exactly what I did. Tonight I took my kids on an adventure, leaving the house in a lurch, the photos in the camera, and the dirty laundry in the basket. We went to the ocean and found the most beautiful golden sunset I've seen all summer. There were salmon swimming upstream, perfect rocks for throwing into the ocean, jellyfish that floated ashore, and a lot of dead fish... Those reminded me of the Goonies and the skeletons. (If you live in Alaska that doesn't sound weird, I promise!)

But here is where the magic really happens. My kids will remember today. They will remember running through the grass, saving the jellyfish that was beached, squishing the mud, and jumping around to avoid those nasty fish skeletons. Yep, that's a keeper!

You know what they won't remember? The laundry in the basket. Or the dishes in the dishwasher. These years are so important to show our children how to DO things. I want to show them that they are more important than my to do list. I want to teach them that there is "no task more important" than "a person to be loved".-Monson

The fact is, it will only be a small time before the chores really do "fix themselves" My kids will be able to help out soon! This seemingly endless burden of chores and homework will seem like a blink of an eye when my house is one day an empty ship.

Until then, I'll keep sailing and hope we can eat treats, play pretend, and embark on enough treasure hunts to be remembered as a bunch of Goonies.
