The car door opens. The client gets out of the car, with that look. I've seen it many times before. Anxiety, frustration. The stress of getting to this appointment all materializing on his face. All that face says to me is, "Please get this over with!" However, the most surprising thing is that I believe him. After last week, I understand why he hates this moment. To my surprise, I agree!
I had a rough pregnancy on number four child with lots of resting due to early labor. Even though I had taken hundreds of people's photos, I hadn't had mine taken more than a handful of times. What surprised me the most was that I HATED it! I wasn't feeling well that day, my red dress fit funny, and didn't even think I could make the appointment. I powered through, felt better, but still had so much stress. I made the appointment, and my sweet friend took my photos any ways. Whether or not I wanted this moment, it was there, I made it through, and now I have my baby bump documented forever.
After that experience, I can really relate and help my clients that HATE photos. My goal isn't to say cheese and get the right shot. It's to make an experience on camera that I document. See a real interaction between two people, or even just me and the client. I have lots of tricks up my sleeve that get real smiles and let the personality of my clients shine through.
This moment is going to be gone! The kids are going to grow up, the baby bump will be replaced by a squirmy sleep deprivation treasure troll, and the kids will go off to college. Don't wait to get the moment captured, because it will come and go whether you're ready or not.
And if you hate your photos being taken, you're in good company! You might be my favorite client! :)
